Day 4 M/S Polarlys

September 13, 2009, Sunday
M/S Polarlys

The day started sunny and bright but by the time we got in to our first port of call where we actually had time to wander around, it was blowing and rainy. Once again we left our umbrella on the ship and we got wet and soggy. Don managed to go almost 3 blocks today before pitching a fit and turning back to the ship. Everybody aboard this ship is desperate for something to do to keep them occupied. After you’ve looked at a thousand little islands with lots of rocks and hills, you get immune to the scenery and want something else. Both of us have read three books apiece.

ABOUT THE FOOD

The food aboard this ship is really very good and very attractive although it isn’t exactly mainstream American food. For example, we’ve had creamed parsnip soup, cream of spinach soup, reindeer meat, every imaginable preparation of fish (smoked, dried, creamed, pickled, etc.), caviar, and my breakfast staple, ham and cheese sandwiches. They are heavy into fruits and vegetables but the way they are prepared makes them unrecognizable and only by taste can you tell what you are eating. All of us are eating way too much, not only because it tastes good but also because we are bored and eating meals are major events in our days!!

DON’S SHOES

I packed most of Don’s clothing for this trip but he packed his own shoes and he made a doozy of a choice. Somewhere in the bowels of his closet he has had these things hidden away and for some reason he decided to drag them out for this trip. God only knows where he acquired them but they are quite “special” (and I mean that in the most unkind way possible). They look like they are made of plastic and the color is the color of meconium (baby poop). And they SQUEAK. Everywhere we go he squeaks and it is REALLY hard to ignore. Now you would think that this would be an embarrassment to him but not a chance!! He can’t hear them and even when I tell him that he is squeaking, he doesn’t care!! I suggested that we could buy him a “nice” pair of shoes over here and he looked at me like I was crazy. Why would he need a different pair of shoes?? These shoes are just fine and he has worn them every single day. The day we get home they are going to disappear, never to be seen again!!
